A show in the Gas Hall at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery features visual and decorative arts from the city’s outstanding collection. Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts and Crafts Movement presents vibrant paintings and exquisite drawings alongside jewellery, glass, textiles and metalwork to explore their radical vision for art and society. More than 160 items are on display.
The exhibition tells the story of the Pre-Raphaelites and their influence on artists and makers well into the 20th century, especially in Birmingham. Paintings made by artists including Kate Bunce, Joseph Southall and Arthur Gaskin combine the poetry and intensity of the Pre-Raphaelites’ work with their own distinctive identity.
The exhibition was touring in the USA and is the first opportunity for over five years to see these works in Birmingham. It continues until at least Christmas 2024. Visit the website for more information and to book tickets: https://www.birminghammuseums.org.uk/exhibitions/victorian-radicals
