BETTY JOEL – GLAMOUR AND INNOVATION: FURNITURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN IN THE 1920S AND 30S

Betty Joel was born in Hong Kong in 1894; nothing in her early life prepared her for the extraordinary success of her eponymous business and subsequent disappearance from the public eye. For most of the inter-war years she ran one of the leading furniture makers in Britain with a shop in Knightsbridge and a factory in Kingston. The talk looks at her life and her work, much of it designed with women specifically in mind, through many schemes she worked on, some of which survive to this day.
