A WALK ROUND BISHOPSGATE, SPITALFIELDS AND WHITECHAPEL
UK EVENT
Wed 06 Oct 2021
Wednesday 6 October & Thursday 7 October 2021
Historian Alec Forshaw will lead one of his popular walks, taking in three of the great East London institutions dating from the late 19th century: the Bishopsgate Institute (1895, Charles Harrison Townsend), Toynbee Hall (1884, Elijah Hoole) and the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1898, Charles Harrison Townsend). The route will pass through Spitalfields Market (1893, Robert Horner), now converted to retail use, and includes Hawksmoor’s Christchurch Spitalfields where the 2004 restoration of the interior and the 2015 conversion of the crypt are striking interventions.
