A VISIT TO PALLANT HOUSE GALLERY AND CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL

UK EVENT

Tue 16 Jul 2024

Our day will start at Pallant House with two private tours. Chief Curator Melanie Vandenbrouck will introduce the house and two special exhibitions: `The Shape of Things: Still Life in Britain’ and Phoebe Cummings’ clay installation exploring the natural world. Then Sarah Norris, the Collections Manager, will give us a tour of the exhibition `British Studio Ceramics: From Bernard Leach to Magdalene Odundo’. This includes ceramics from Leach and his apprentices in the 1920s and 30s, through the post-war modernity of European emigres such as Lucie Rie and Hans Coper to key figures in contemporary ceramics.

In the afternoon we will have a special tour of Chichester Cathedral focussing on Dean Walter Hussey (1909-1985), who commissioned important works for the cathedral by Graham Sutherland, John Piper, Geoffrey Clarke and Marc Chagall. He was a key figure in saving Pallant House and in its opening as a gallery in 1982 after he donated his collection to the city. The visit will begin at 11.30 and will finish by 3.30.
