A VISIT TO CHELTENHAM LADIES’ COLLEGE AND ALL SAINTS CHURCH
UK EVENT
Wed 23 Oct 2024
Dating from 1873, the main Cheltenham Ladies’ College buildings are designed in ecclesiastical style by architect John Middleton and the interior shows the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement. The tour will feature the works of James Eadie Reid, Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, William De Morgan and John Ruskin. Ruskin was a great admirer of Dorothea Beale, the headmistress who commissioned the Arts & Crafts interior. Alongside stained glass there are some Burne-Jones paintings which were designs for Christ Church, Oxford.
After the College, we will move to Grade 1 Listed All Saints Church, also designed by Middleton, for a guided tour. Seen as Middleton’s chef d’oeuvre, we will see the sumptuous Gothic revival interior.
The tour starts at the Ladies’ College at 1.30 pm. Those who have not travelled to Cheltenham by car will transfer to All Saints on foot or by public transport for the tour there at 3pm. The Church tour will be followed by tea and biscuits.
Please contact Martin Webster, Chairman of the Events sub-committee if you would like a place on this visit.
